Staff was up there to assist with the hands on opportunity. They have several areas where the floor is replaced by see though windows to see all the way to the displays on the ground. The ride up to the top of the tower was very cool. The moon building was really neat as well with actual seed packets with tomato for the moon! We loved that the huge AC unit was even painted to look like a moon biggie with astronauts. The 4 year old loved climbing in the helicopters as she wants to fly them! The outside space area was really neat and even a rocket that simulates blasting off. The chairs are a little to comfortable as we didn’t want to move one, but the kids made sure we did. The retired veteran loved the recliners that we sat and listed to first hand accounts of a soldier in Viet Nam. There are so many hands on activities and information that no matter what age you are you will totally enjoy this! The adults really enjoyed the wonderfully comfortable rocking chairs hearing first hand accounts of farmer. The staff even played with the girls! The slide from the third floor to the second floor is not for the faint of heart and the staff encouraged the adults to go too.we passed and the girls went once and it must have been VERY fast because neither wanted to try again. The third floor water area was a hit and almost 5 year old and 6 year old did not want to leave this area. We started our day with the movie and spent several hours inside. This is a MUST do! The staff was beyond amazing and attentive to special needs children! They went above and beyond to adjust for special needs children to participate. This site is a bit out-of-the way but worth catching (wish we got our kids out here during their growing up years) we were travelling from Memphis to Louisville, KY, so it worked out for us to make a stop here. There are very clean bathrooms and plentiful parking. We had a bite to eat in their café, with was small with a limited menu (considering the size and popularity of this place, the café was underwhelming). All in all, we spent 4½ hours here, but families could spend all day, especially in nice weather. The building is echoey and got loud at many points, especially near the “human slide” right near some galleries we were perusing separating the quieter galleries from the noisy hands-on areas would have been a better design. (Not sure why they have that here!) There is a nice variety of things to see and do here for all ages-history, natural history, science, etc.-plus hands-on activities and experiences that kids would enjoy. There was one gallery that seemed out of place here: displays and descriptions of torture methods and articles it was gruesome and definitely not something kids should see. We found the special exhibit on maps and globes a lot more interesting than we expected. We really enjoyed the exhibit about the development of media and communications technology through the decades with samples of the cutting-edge items on the market at the time. There are military exhibits on the Civil War, World Wars I & II, etc. They have a nice collection of classic cars and early automotive memorabilia. A Native American gallery contained a huge collection of arrowheads and spear heads (we thought that Johnny Morris had every last one of those in his museums in MO!). There are skeletons of dinosaurs and other ancient creatures. The Discovery Center holds many fun and interesting things as well. The train depot, with several restored passenger train cars you can walk through, was nice to see one car invites you to sit in a comfy seat for a bit and listen to interesting and informative narration. Don’t miss the two short films shown there on Daniel Boone and the Westward expansion of our nation. There are good history exhibits in Liberty Hall, including beautiful reproductions of patriotic paintings. Freedom Square had interesting exhibits in several buildings. Also in that area is a large building with agriculture-themed exhibits. We really enjoyed their collection of old cabins and other buildings with authentic furnishings and artifacts. We began outdoors with Heritage Park, since it was due to storm soon. My husband & I recently visited here and thoroughly enjoyed it.
